GSoC 2026 Contributor Introduction – Interest in ML Classification of Mosquito Genomic Data

Hello MalariaGEN team,

My name is Karthik and I am interested in contributing to MalariaGEN for GSoC 2026.

I have been reviewing the project ideas and I  am particularly interested in the project “Machine-learning classifier for genomic classification in malaria mosquitoes.”

I have started exploring the Vector Observatory resources and examining how mosquito genomic datasets are structured. I am currently setting up the analysis environment and looking into how genomic variant data could be prepared for machine learning workflows.

My background includes Python, pandas, and scikit-learn for data analysis and machine learning, and I am especially interested in contributing to genomic data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation.

Before submitting a proposal, I would like to begin contributing to the project and become familiar with the codebase. Are there any beginner issues, dataset preparation tasks, or small improvements that new contributors could start with?
